How to record a cover song on your iPhone
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerPlay the backing track quietly from the phone or a nearby speaker, sing or play facing the phone in a soft-furnished room, keep the phone close, do a short test, and record several takes.
The room
Soft furnishings absorb echo. A bedroom with curtains and a bed sounds better than a kitchen.
Backing track
Keep it a bit quieter than you’d expect, so your voice sits on top. Playing from the same phone avoids Bluetooth delay.
Mic
The phone’s mic works; an external mic helps. Keep a steady distance, about a hand span to an arm’s length.
Video
Stand or sit at eye level, face the light, and frame from the waist up or include your instrument.
Rights
Posting covers involves music rights. Platform libraries and licences vary. This isn’t legal advice.
Questions
Can I record audio and video separately?
Yes. Many musicians record audio separately and line it up with the video.
