Reducing wind noise when you film outside

Short answerTurn your back to the wind, shield the microphone with your body or a foam cover, and use an external mic with a windscreen if it matters.

Wind blowing across a phone microphone makes a rumbling noise that is hard to remove later.

Shield the microphone

Turn your body so you block the wind, or film with the wind behind you. Shooting beside a wall or a car gives shelter.

Use an external microphone with a windshield

A small clip-on microphone with a foam or fur cover reduces wind much more than a phone does alone. Make sure it is compatible with your iPhone.

Move closer to your subject

Closer microphones pick up more voice compared with wind.

Do a test clip

Record five seconds and listen with headphones.

Wind reduction is built into our app and still being tested. It is not released yet and results will depend on your phone and conditions.
