How to reduce background noise in iPhone videos
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerThe biggest gains come before you press record: move closer to the phone or use a mic, turn off fans, close windows and choose a soft room. Some recent iPhones also let you change the audio mix of videos in Photos.
Before recording
- Get the mic closer to your mouth than to the noise.
- Turn off fans, air conditioning and TVs.
- Close windows and doors.
- Choose rooms with soft furnishings.
Recent iPhones
On iPhone 16 models and later, the Photos app can change a video’s Audio Mix, including an option that focuses on voices in frame.
After recording
Many editing apps have noise reduction. Use it gently; too much makes voices sound robotic.
Questions
Does a lapel mic help?
Yes. It’s close to your mouth, so your voice is much louder than the background.
